Lewis Francis Herreshoff was the son of the great Nathanael Green Herreshoff, the Wizard of Bristol, and although he did not obtained the recognition of his father nor that of other more known designers, as Alden or Stephens, he then did not designed so many yachts as them. Notwithstanding he left a mark on Yacht design with iconic vessels as Landfall, Ticonderoga or Tioga. He was also a prolific writer and published many drawings of boats that were later worldwide reproduced. He had clever ideas about how must be a proper cruising boat. No matter of the dimensions, she should be so beautiful and elegant as to stand out among her contemporaries. Clipper bows, high aspect ratio rigs, moderate over hangs, many ketches came out from his desk. One of his known books “Sensible Cruising Designs” spots many of his designs and among them the “Dulcinea” class a double ender (a feature very highly considered by traditional sailors, as well then as today) with a tall Ketch rig. Of this class, which had a good success, two units were built in Switzerland by the well known Portier Yard, at Meilen on Zürich's lake. Escapado is one of them. Her hull lines determine a vessel with short over-hangs and depth, very buoyant and with relatively fine entries, good to obtain high speed averages. Her craftmanship is of very high quality and together with the care she has received over the years, has kept her in such a good shape and originality. The livability on deck is magnific, below decks a bit more sacrificed by today standards. But it had to be luxurious when she came out, with a full saloon, a galley and a head with enough height to stand up on such a small vessel. Escapado is invery good shape and has many recent good quality sails.
