The Orust Island, on the Sweden's West Coast is since immemorial times a boat building country of primary importance. Towards the mid XIX century this building tradition started shifting from warships and merchantmen buildings to yachts. In 1928 a young Carl Andersson founded the Vindö Yard on Nötesund Bay. Since then and until his age of ninety every model produced by the Yard, wooden built until 1971 and fibreglass since, were designed by him. Carl died in 1979, thus this offered boat is one of the last built by him. Vindö built at the peak of its activity more than 200 units per year, during the Seventies, with 50 plus employees. But the 1980 crisis put an end to the family ownership and the Yard went to another management, always keeping its very high building quality, but in much reduced numbers, until its definitive end after more than sixty years of activity.
Carl Andersson designed the Vindö 50 in 1974 in two versions: a sloop with aft cockpit and a ketch with central cockpit, called 50 MS. The finishing quality was the highest possible. Hull and deck are fibreglass built and the wooden roof and grp deck joint is made with an L shaped deck end that joints to an L shaped wood cut for a perfect unit. This way any possible leak is ingenioulsy avoided with a unic system typical of the Yard. Thanks to this they could build and market boats that appeared wooden built for many years. The lead ballast is keel encapsulated, thus avoiding the use of bolts.
The "Betsy" is a "hybrid" Vindö 50 as she is a central cockpit sloop rigged unit, allowing better upwind performances. Her internal lay-out is perfect for family sailing or in company with friends as there is the maximum privacy between the cabins which are well separated between them. The deep cockpit, well protected while sailing, allows up to six guests around the table/binnacle. The craftmanship is huge everywhere as the maintenance of this unit is. The original teak on deck was eliminated years ago and replaced by an antiskid finishing professionally made and very elegant indeed. The deck lay-out is very useful and uncluttered. Comfortable cushions can be laid on the coach-roof. Electric and hydraulic system are new, the electronics are very recent and we have to outline a powerful autopilot. The engine (with less than 100 hours!), windlass, halyards and sheets, covers and other equipment are new. Sails are in perfect shape and this vessel is quite ready to sail away. A change in programs of her owner is the reason for the sale. The "Betsy" is a real classic jewel, without issues for many years.
