Ragnar Appelgren (1909-1993) was a Norwegian cosmetics industrialist and passionate sailor. In 1953 he commissioned a large sailing yacht from Bjarne Aas. It was the largest boat Aas had ever designed. It was a 12-metre yacht of the then recent Cruiser-Racer class (Int. C-R), which was inspired by the Metric Formula (IR), but with dimensions that were more geared to offshore sailing (greater freeboard, deeper draft, more displacement, etc.). From the metric boats, the wide overhangs were maintained, which give the CR boats an elegance that stands out among all the classics. The new ship was built in Fredrikstad (near the Swedish border) and was the largest ship built by the yard, which belonged to Aas himself, up to that date. Before the Second World War, Bjarne Aas had made a name for himself with his 6m. IR, like Olin Stephens, and like him he always felt linked to the pure lines of International Rule. He even won a gold medal at the Olympic Games in Paris in 1924, precisely in the 6 IR class. For all these reasons, the design of Ingeborg, as Appelgren's boat was called in homage to his wife and daughter, shows such marked and elegant features, which also give it an essential reserve of buoyancy for bad weather. The interior has a very cosy and sporty style at the same time. Entering from the stern, there is the navigation room, with the engine panel and a transverse bulkhead through which the main cabin is accessed and which is shaped in such a way that it constitutes a chart table by the beam. The owner’s cabin occupies the full beam and has a dedicated head. A door on the port side gives access to the ship's second vestibule, with the so called ocean companionway (to the side and amidships) and from there to the saloon, which is spacious and airy. The convertible sofas are each equipped with a quarter berth, and the access to the galley has a second head on the port side. The galley takes up the entire beam forward and has ample work space. Further forward in the forepeak, a curtain separates the guest cabin from the anchor locker. Appelgren sailed Ingeborg in the North Sea for three years until 1957, winning many races and doing family cruises. From then on, he wanted to establish his home port in Palma de Mallorca, but after another three years, in 1960, he sold the Ingeborg to Manuel Giró Minguella, a Spanish industrialist, famous for being the owner of the Ossa motorbike brand. Manuel Giró renamed her Yanira, one of the 50 Nereids, Mediterranean nymphs who, according to the ancient Greeks, looked after sailors, and enjoyed her for ten years until he sold her to a syndicate of 10 friends. Later, this fast sailing ship was owned by the families of Luis Gil de Biedma and Federico García Planas, until the latter became the sole owner in 1983. In 2013, the boat changed ownership again and her new owner underwent an extensive restoration cycle, with new mast and sails, new caulking and paint of the hull, refit of the chainplates and replacement of some planks and frames, as well as complete renovation of the deck. Since then the Yanira has participated in numerous regattas with impressive results (including seven King's Cups - six in a row, several times champion in the Puig Vela Clàssica; several victories in Les Voiles de Saint Tropez and even in the General Cruiser IR of the Alfonso XIII Barcelona-Menorca trophy which she won in 2000 and 2005 against modern boats). At the same time, her owner has enjoyed magnificent cruising trips with his family, sailing all over the Mediterranean. We can therefore affirm that the Yanira perfectly fulfils the two programmes that her design formula had envisaged and is in perfect structural condition to continue to do so with a new owner.
