Pierino Crosato, whom many called Piero even though that was his nickname, began building boats near Venice in the 1960s. The quality of his work soon made him famous among the best Italian craftsmen of the time. In 1972, the Swedish shipyard Solna Marine began production of a modern fibreglass sports cruiser designed by Peter Norlin, the Norlin 34, which was a great commercial (more than 120 units were built) and sporting success. At the request of a well-known Italian sailor, Roberto Bormioli, Crosato asked Norlin for a laminated wood version, which he built in 1977 under the name Mida. The new boat was lighter and faster than the fibreglass version. We do not know much about the early sporting history of this boat, but proof of its excellent performance is that in 2016 it won the ‘La lunga Bolina’ regatta between Argentario and the islands of Elba and Montecristo, ahead of a fleet of 55 competitors. The Mida arrived in Spain less than 10 years ago, under the name Totó, and its current owner bought it about four years ago and changed its name to Tayyara. Today it is in excellent condition and seaworthy. It is a great fast cruiser and may also be of interest for classic regattas in the Mediterranean, in the new IOR Classics category.
