The ChillOut 40 was conceived as a fast ocean-going cruiser, entirely independent of any racing formula. Its construction from laminated timber, covered with fibreglass, reflects the intention to build one or more units that are fully customised by their respective owners, without the constraints imposed by prefabricated moulds. The design is by Barracuda Yachts, founded by Íñigo Toledo and Xavi Cardell, with the latter leading the project. The idea was to build two models (a 40-foot and a 43-foot) in India, where there is an abundance of high-quality labour and where costs allow for construction without the use of moulds. Only one unit of each model was built before disagreements over commercial strategies first slowed down and then brought the initiative to a halt. The Kailash, as the boat on offer is called, is the 40-foot ChillOut, which has been lovingly cared for by her owner from the very beginning. He has sailed her practically all the way round the world, starting from India where the boat was built. Its name, Kailash, comes from the mountain where the River Indus has its source. It is a 40-footer with a very wide hull, a large, comfortable cockpit and an elegant, rounded, varnished cabin – a touch of classic style in a design that remains modern even today. Her extremely sleek waterlines enable her to reach high speeds with ease, whilst the wide beam – aided by ballast amounting to nearly 35 per cent of its displacement of almost 10 tonnes – ensures a smooth ride in all conditions. The extremely robust construction in laminated timber, covered with fibreglass, provides the best balance between hull rigidity and manufacturing cost. The high quality of the finish is evident in the deck fittings, which are among the finest on the market. Below deck, the space is generous and very well utilised, particularly for stowing all the equipment needed for long voyages. The three cabins and two bathrooms allow three couples to stay on board in comfort. A single couple can easily handle this boat and spend long periods at sea without needing to replenish either water or fuel. A highly recommended boat for long, fast and comfortable cruises.
